182 at the WSAZ - War Zone

Postby Bearhugger » Fri Jan 07, 2022 8:19 pm

It is time to start talking about the WSAZ and a great place to start is with the 182 pound weight class.

Using the Christmas Eve edition of Bear Tracks, here is who we should see at the WSAZ at 182:

AA/A #1 ranked Bush of Cameron. He takes on all comers, made it to day 2 of Super 32 and is WVU bound next season.

AAA #1 ranked Edwards of Parkersburg South. He is headed to Fairmont State next season.

AAA #2 ranked Giompalo of Cabell Midland. The inaugural Mat Time Wrestler of the Week.

AAA #3 ranked Misner of Huntington.

AAA #4 ranked Edge of St. Albans. State runner up and state champion.

AA/A #4 ranked Jones of Nicholas County

AA/A #5 ranked Vandall of Greenbrier West

AAA #5 ranked Taylor of University

AA/A #8 ranked Polk of Shady Spring

AAA #8 ranked Marandola of Musselman

As rankings change, we will keep an eye on this WSAZ Extravaganza.

Yes. My brain has been negatively impacted by all of today's wrestling cancellations.

Wright wins 182 if he did decide to move up.

I think it would be more likely for him to move down to 160, rather than move up. Only real reason to move would be from a team standpoint for the state tournament if the other wrestlers from South that move would possibly finish higher at that tournament. I agree he wins at any of the three weight classes in AAA, not meaning to knock any of the kids at those weight classes. Just my opinion having watched most of them wrestle. Would be interesting to see him wrestle Bush who is the real deal, but that's giving up a lot of weight. I would have liked to have seen him wrestle Logan Ours from Beaver Local at the dual, but Ours was out at the time. From a team standpoint it didn't make sense to go to 160 at the OVAC tournament, but it would have been interesting to watch. Ours is also the real deal and came very close to winning it all at the Ironman.

Where did Bush finish as a freshman? He goes from not on the podium to second as a soph, then first as a jr, then committing to wvu, to beating some nationally ranked wrestlers as a sr. Was he just raw coming into hs or what. Just seems like he’s improved at an insane rate.

I never saw Ian wrestle his freshman year, but the brackets from the state tournament show him going 1-2 at 170 pounds. He unfortunately caught the third and fourth place finishers his second and third matches, losing by decisions, and did not place.

A couple weeks later he finished 5th at NHSCA Freshman Nationals at 170.

Between Ian and the two guys that beat him that year, all 3 were finalists the next year.

I wish I would have paid better attention to that bracket that year. Sounds like some good wrestling going on.
