Bearhugger's preseason State tournament prediction

Postby KDunbar » Thu Dec 02, 2021 2:10 am

I know the ranking system that Bearhugger has devised may not be meant for predicting who will win the State tournament, but in light of the recent victory by Saint Albans over South in a dual it is interesting that using placement points for the ranked wrestlers first through sixth you would get a team score of Saint Albans 99 to South with 90. It is of note that South is without 170 pound State runner-up Jude Childers (due to an injury) and he is projected to be available by January to wrestle at 152 pounds, down to his actual weight finally for his Senior season. His presence would likely give south the third ranked wrestler, making the team points even at 99 points each. The WSAZ in January may give us a preview of what to expect come the State tournament. The victories in the dual between the two teams would flip the 1st and 2nd ranked wrestlers at 126 and 182. These changes would cancel each other out with the team score still being a tie. Just interesting to think about as we head into the season.

It's hard to tell for sure without seeing how the weights will shake out, but it looks like the team race could be tight this year between St. Albans, South, Spring Mills and Wheeling Park (Apologize for who I've missed these 4 stood out). Is it possible South ends up outside the top 3 for the first time since 2008? Regardless it looks like the team race should be exciting this year!

I agree. Good competition is good for everybody, especially the fans. All the team leaders on those 4 teams need to step up and push/help their teammates get better throughout the year. That's the team that will win. The others will just have some place winners. Looking forward to a competitive year. That's what it's all about.
