West Liberty Coach Danny Irwin has to be on anyone’s list of the best young college wrestling coaches in the country. After leading Wheeling Jesuit to an NCAA D-II runner-up finish in 2019, he moved over to WLU and finished 3rd this weekend at the NCAAs. It was West Liberty’s highest NCAA finish since they moved up to D-2.
Five West Liberty wrestlers placed in the top eight of their respective weight classes to earn NCAA Division II All-America recognition. In addition to Laya's 125-pound national championship, Connor Craig placed second at 184 for the second straight year with Ty McGeary taking third at 174, Ty Warner fourth at 141 and Logan Kemp eighth at 197.
