Wvu wrestle offs

Postby Heath » Sun Dec 20, 2020 10:49 pm

Anyone watch them? Hall looked good. Surprised he's going 165lb tho. Carman looked good. Was hoping Roberts would beat Hogue. Rea and Adams both didn't wrestle.
Cardinale won both his matches at 125
Seibert won one at 133/141
Boyd won his only match at 141. It'd be nice if he could somehow make 133 or if he or Rea could bump up.
Hogue won both matches at 149.
Hornfeck won out at 157. Maybe dowling and go down to 149?
Hall won both matches easily 165
Joll won both his matches 174
Carman won both his matches at 184
Wolfgram won his one HW bout

Young team.

I was able to watch on and off and overall I was happy with what I saw, particularly from (as you noted) what looks to be a very young team. There were a few surprises for me. One of which was not to see Rae competing, especially considering there were matches contested at all of the weights he could conceivable go (133-149). Adams was less surprising since out of everyone on WVU's team he is probably the largest favorite to start without challenge (plus no match was contests at 197 at all). Lets just hope this didnt have anything to do with injury.

WVU has a good problem in the middle of its line-up between 149-157 with Hogue, Roberts, Hornfeck, and Dowling all being quality wrestlers. Its never bad to have depth and I'll be interested to see how things continue to play out as weights stabilize, change, etc. throughout the year.

Hall did look impressive. I was somewhat surprised to see him at 165 as well, but given his performance it seems to have been the right move for him. He has always had the frame to get bigger (long) and he has taken some fairly large jumps in weight in the past (138-152 between Jr. and Sr. year) but he always manages to make it work. Given the results it also appears to be what is best for the lineup, since throwing his name in at the already crowded 149-157 group would just result in someone moving up anyway or another quality competitor sitting on the bench/in-red shirt.

Being a home town loyalist, I was glad to see Carman take both his matches! He looked to be fully built into 184 lbs. in his second year in Morgantown and I'm excited to see how he competes this year.

Lastly, I am excited for this year, but more so for the future as the current lineup (going solely off wrestle-off and expectations at 197) has only 1 senior in Hogue (with the potential for Roberts and Dowling, both true freshman being there).
