One of the wildest and closest finishes at the state tournament took place in 1977 and it involved 4 teams racing for the top spot. Wheeling Park held off John Marshall, Parkersburg South and Parkersburg High that were only separated by 3.5 points! John Marshall had 4 individual champions to make it close at the end. They also had one of the best and unusual names in Gordon Gordon at Unlimited.

1989 AA/A was the best to the finish line team race I can remember. St. Mary's had 4 wrestlers, Orarn Butler, Joe Hefner, Jeff Poling and Mike Davis in the finals. Spencer had 5 wrestlers,Todd Kendall, Dave Saunders, Dave Carper, Tom Greathouse, and Rick Roberts in the finals. St. Mary's finished with 2 champions and 2 runners up compared to Spencer's 2 champions and 3 runners up. Poling and Roberts met in the 160 lb final which Poling won with a major decision. St. Mary's won the tournament by 1/2 of a point with 158 points compared to Spencer's 157.5 points.

I remember that one also coach. It was an exciting finish! I just thought the one in 1977 was so unique because it involved so many teams. Ironically, the Monarchs lost by 1.5 points the following year(1978) to the same team...Wheeling Park!
