To change the subject...
I'm surprised that with all the talk about rankings, nobody has commented on this. I am always interested to see how the final rankings after the regionals compare with the actual finish.
Of course, since I am up to my eyeballs with the "rankings" during the season, I would like them to be as accurate as possible. On the other hand, it warms the cockles of my heart when a wrestler outperforms somebody's "expectations" and proves the rankers wrong. Once again, it is demonstrated that anything can happen at the tournament.
Congratulations to all wrestlers.

Re: Rankings
how bout swishier from hampshier not even rated at 195 ! he beat the #3 rated kid for third place. then there's shamblin of south rated #4 beating the #2 and then the #1 for the championship and those matches were not even close. if you ask me he should be in the running for outstanding wrestler of the tournament. i also think that award should be only giving to the wrestler who does the best AT THE STATE TOURNEY, and not what they achieved during the season.

Re: Rankings
11 weight classes
22 Kids not ranked in the top 6 placed.
8 unranked kids placed.
3 weights to go in AAA
To me, what would be a more interesting comparison is the pre-regional rankings to actual state placewinners. After all, the argument posed by some was that regions should be re-aligned in accordance with the rankings. Obviously, this would have been done in accordance with pre-regional rankings, since regions can't be re-aligned according to rankings after regionals have already taken place.
I''ll try to put that together, if I have the time.

Re: Rankings
22 not ranked in the top 6 placed. That means they were ranked in the top 10. Out of 76 placers (excluding those that were not ranked at all and placed), that means that 72% of the time those that placed were in the top 6, and 28% of the time they over achieved their designated rank. Out of a grand total of 84 placers for the tournament, 8 of them that placed were not ranked at all. That means that about 9.5% of the time we had a cinderella story, but 90.5% of the time, those that placed were ranked.
To me that means the rankings are a pretty significant indicator of what happens on the podium. I am not taking away the fact that you have those that over achieve, peak at the right time, or were just underrated. That is awesome and a testimony for those wrestlers, teams, and coaches. Congratulations to them.
I am not saying that rankings are the end all be all, I am saying they are a fairly reliable indicator of what we can expect to see on the podium at any given tournament. I am not saying they mean everything, but to say that they mean nothing is just not accurate.
