132lbs in AA/A region 1 was a bad scene in a lot of ways.
There were SIX ranked wrestlers in R1 132lbs.
Breakdown of the six ranked:
1. One returning 2016 state runner up
2. One returning 2016 state 4th placer
3. Three 2016 state tournament qualifiers
4. One mystery man.
The 2017 qualifiers were:
C = returning 2016 state runner up
R = Returning state qualifier
3 = Returning 2016 4th placer
4 = Mystery Man
Other points:
1. Two returning 2016 state qualifiers did not qualify for 2017.
2. The Mystery Man put the 2016 4th placer down into consolation. They had a rematch for third place and the Mystery man lost. The rubber match is scheduled in Huntington this weekend.
3. Just who is the Mystery Man? Upon a little research.....he is a rough customer. 2015 state 5th place winner. Lost to the eventual state champion and to the eventual 3rd place winner. Was ranked #5 in 2016 before regionals. Did not wrestle in regionals for some reason. ???? He is back!
4. There are eight regional tournaments. 14 weight classes. 8 x 14 = 112 regional champions.
The 2017 champion above is the ONLY regional champion this season that had three matches and went the distance in all three matches. That is another indicator of how tough this weight class was. Most regional champions wrestle 2 to 3 matches with 1 to 2 pins involved. There were a few champs that had 4 matches but they had all or almost all pins. This champ had to work to the time limit three times.
All returning wrestlers in this weight class are going on the list for next season.
Good luck men!
