AA/A BEAR TRACKS – JANUARY 16th, 2019

WSAZ weekend!!!!! OVAC weekend!!!!! The Mountaineer Match Up will have some highly probably state finals previews too.

There are some very good wrestlers that are in "Pack" status that should do well this weekend. Some are not even listed because of potential weight class changes.

Important points:
1. PLEASE COMMENT WHERE THERE ARE RANKING DISCREPANICES. UNFORTUNATELY NOT ALL SCHOOLS POST SCORES.
2. Last season’s state place winners were given higher rankings to begin this season. Until they get defeated, they stay in the top five.
3. If you see two wrestlers for the same school listed under the same weight class, that is because they are both noteworthy and their final weight classes and status are not known. In addition, they have also placed in tournaments.
4. Some wrestlers have moved into the top five due to recent success in winning tournaments or still being undefeated despite not beating a previously ranked wrestler.
5. If a wrestler has yet to wrestle or is temporarily out, they have been dropped to the “Pack”.
6. Wrestlers who place in their respective tournaments will get entered into the Pack first. Others will follow in due time.
7. As always, turn in your scores, input, private messages, etc.
8. IF YOU SEE any discrepancies, then please advise and corrections will be made.
9. Thank you to all that have contributed from all forms of social media.

I love the rankings! A lot of hard work to put them together!

Question: is there a way to add what year in school each wrestler is?

That is a great idea that has been around for awhile now. I will start working on adding the school year to the ranked wrestlers first. As for the Pack, that hopefully will come in time.

@170 it appears that Hughart from Sissonville defeated Kee from Herbert Hoover at Pat Vance http://www.wvmat.com/scores/19scores/0105patv.pdf

The day after the Pat Vance, I heard about some of the events. The word I received was that Kee accidently slammed Hughart. Hughurt wanted to continue but wasn't permitted. Hughart was declared the winner.

I do not know how this would be viewed for future seeding criteria. Maybe a coach, an official or a tournament director can comment on how this is actually viewed when seeding.

I did see that Kee was seeded higher than Hughart at the WSAZ.

For the rankings I compile, I elected not to view a DQ as a reason to drop a wrestler in the rankings.

Unfortunately, accidental slams are still slams. Hughart over Kee would be the head to head result for seeding. Depending on the score at the time and match time, you might see arguments to not hold it against Kee. For example, if there were 30 seconds left in the match and Kee was up by 10 (i was not in attendance, purely hypothetical), i would argue it should not be held against Kee. However, for seeding, technically the head to head favors Hughart.

Summers of Bridgeport beat Casto of Clay 5-4 in ride time with an escape

A ref just robbed Logan Conley of Braxton in a match against Stearns of LH. Conley was awarded a takedown, then changed to an escape at the end. Then, in OT Conley had a takedown and was not awarded. Then, he gives Stearns 2 when he never covered at the end. Stearns is a great wrestler, but Conley was robbed in that match.

I agree with the other two statements but at the end Stearns most def had two. He was behind and the other kids hand was on the mat that’s TWO

Secondly never let the call come to an officials call take care of business before it gets there

That's an easy thing to say, but Conley and Stearns are both too good and a refs call can definitely make a difference.

And, I have no idea what you seen to think that was a 2 at the end. Maybe you had a better angle than I had

Another example was the may-Hayes stall call to give Hayes the 3-2 decision at the end. Maybe Sturgis wasn't working offense as he was shoving Hayes out of bounds.

He was stalling LOL. It def was two at the end. Quit making excuses and blaming the ref

I'm not crying or care who won. However, both calls were horrible.

They were close to correct. Judgement call. Heath did an outstanding job. People need to respect officials more you cant do their job

Officials are human just like the rest of us. Sometimes they don’t see what we see due to the angle and position the wrestlers are in. As spectators we tend to get frustrated when our team and especially our kid does not get points they deserve or “unfair” calls that are made. Become an official so you will be able to make those calls and see what they see.

tell that to Saints fans (obvious pass interference) or Chiefs fans (roughing the passer on 3rd down).

I never said anything disparaging about this particular referee. I never put his name out there and I never said it was intentional. Fact is the ref cost these kids the matches this weekend. I am not seeing what I want to see because I am not from either one of the schools involved in the match(es).

The human officials chose to do this job. Just like human coaches. I do not see many parents saying, "just become a coach" or "the coach sees it differently than us parents see it." We chose to coach and we chose to referee. Therefore, we put the X on our own backs to be criticized.

So, I am going to criticize the call. I am not criticizing the person. It was horrible.

I understand how all of you feel. I choose to talk about many topics that many people want to ignore or simply cannot come up with any creative solutions to. This in return puts an "X" on my back.

It is obvious to me that when the "people doing the job" are given a suggestion to improve a problem (backed up with facts), the problem is ignored, the supporting facts are ignored and the response is "why don't you do the job?" Thus, the problem continues and grows from season to season.
