Before the forum spins into a tizzy, my understanding of the WSAZ seeding criteria are:

1. Head-to-head
2. Common opponent
3. Returning state champion
4. Returning state placer
5. Returning state qualifier
6. Returning WSAZ champion
7. Returning WSAZ placer
8. Won-loss record/win percentage

So when you look at the seeds and wonder why is wrestler X seeded 8 when I think he is clearly better than wrestler y who is seeded 6, the answer to your question can be found in that criteria. The criteria WSAZ uses is pretty similar to the criteria used at most other big tournaments where you have wrestlers from multiple states attending.

Does anyone know who is on the "seeding committee" for WSAZ's? Just curious. Who? How many? etc.

Seeding is done at a coach's meeting.

No, it isn't. There is no high school seeding meeting attended by the coaches. There is a seeding committee that seeds the wrestlers at each weight according to the seeding criteria. I think the committee is primarily the coaches responsible for running the tournament (Huntington, Cabell Midland). Once you establish the criteria, it isn't really that hard to figure out where the wrestlers should be seeded.

I knew it was done by a committee but I didn't think it would consist of coaches who have kids competing. Seems a little sketchy but maybe that's how all tournaments are done. Interesting for sure.

Seeds are up and I see 160 has a couple of kids not seeded that should be going by the criteria .

From what I was told last year at the tournament, the seeding committee consist of Rob and Bill Archer, Jon Dempsey, and tournament director Rob St. Clair. The tournament uses Cabell Midlands mats, but they are not a host of the tournament and not on the seeding committee. If going by the seeding criteria, there were kids who were looked over, but how could you not miss a few. Its the average kids who don't get seeded and get "random draws" that is really suspicious. If you pay close enough attention to the brackets you will see that certain average kids are strategically put in the bracket so that they are lined up to score much needed team points and others are given hammers for their first match.

I was just curious if this is common practice in big tournaments. I understand that seeding criteria is well defined, but it still would be easy to stack the bracket. You know what they say,,,"to be the best, you have to beat the best". However, placing and scoring team points might be another story.

Here is a post for 2016 where WSAZ seeding criteria was discussed previously. It still appears to be the same criteria that is being "passed around" here in 2018.
