Rule Changes for 2024 season
High school wrestling rules changes. Here are the new rule changes for high school wrestling beginning with the 2024-25 season from the NFHS. - **Inbounds Rule Change**: Now only one point of contact of either wrestler needs to be inside or on the boundary line to be considered inbounds. Previously,...

Re: Regional Seeding Criteria
I once had a wrestler who was 44-1 and his only loss was an OT loss to a Fargo champ who went in to be a Div1 all American. We wrestled him in Philo Ohio but the kid was from Graham. We wrestled almost 100 different teams from 9 states that season. My wrestler was a two time returning champ at WSAZ....

Re: Charleston Duals results?
I was told the top 4 teams were Huntington, Indy, Milton and Barboursville but I am not sure of the order. I also heard they had to go all the way to criteria F to decide Milton over Edison.

Re: Shockey/Giompalo
This is indicative of the coaching both these young men received as well. To compete with the injury that Shockey had took incredible willpower and grit and I am sure he wanted to wrestle that finals match. Kudos to him for his courage and to his coaches for allowing him to try albeit with not much ...

Re: WSAZ Numbers by Weight Class
One thing to consider, as more and more girls enter the sport and as long as they compete in the same events as the guys, the lower weights should continue to grow. There are simply more smaller middle school age girls who will choose to compete. I am glad to see that folks are keeping track of entr...

Another couple of young ladies from back then who were tough were Brittany Woodall of Buck Upshur who I believe qualified for high school states all four years and may have ...

Re: WSAZ Best Performers
In regards to the highest placing female that would be Erica Dye of Wirt County who was a WSAZ Champion defeating a fine wrestler named Hardy from Chesapeake in the finals pretty convincingly. This would have been 1998 if memory serves me well, and it usually does, LOL.

Congratulations are definitely in order. Some folks have worked very hard to get to that level. I have been away from the sport for a decade but back then Hurricane was never a serious contender at the bigger events. They have truly come a long way.

Re: Primary reason for WVMAT forum?
The website and the forum in particular used to have a great many more users. There was an instance when Dr. Miller had to essentially start over with a new version of software and a new look. Sadly, many of the great posters did not migrate to the new setup. People can complain about this site and ...

We truly lost one of the very best this morning. Gator’s friendship is something I will always treasure. We talked frequently but only got together a few times a year to share a meal and then watch wrestling. Steve was one of the kindest, most selfless guys I ever had the privilege of knowing. He lo...

Re: WSAZ or State?
WSAZ - larger brackets, out of state schools, only two long days so more matches in less time.
PS Logan lost on penalty points in the last few seconds on a disputed call so it’s not like he got dominated.

Re: Seed with Speed
I am just an old retired guy but should not head to head recent matches trump everything. Example last years 3 rd place guy in States beats the returning champ head to head. Would not the third place guy be seeded higher? Also, placing at “our tournament” is a bit shaky. Suppose, say Blair or Walsh ...

Re: Inconsistency of refereeing
I want to echo what Mr. Keeney posted. Only once in my almost 30 years of coaching was I told to “sit down and shut up.” This was out of state and it was by a ref who had obviously stopped off at a local tavern on his way to the match. He called a takedown that was not only out of the circle but off...

I encounter the strangest thing. SikoraSoft works great as long as my WiFi is off and I connect with LTE. If I try to connect with WiFi it will not load. Not just my home WiFi either, I have tried it from home (Suddenlink) a Starbucks (Comcast) and my beach house (ATMC) at different times. This has ...

There was a small army of parents who would work tirelessly to make sure everything came off without a hitch. The community support ...

Re: Where's South
I can think of several instances off hand where both the varsity and JV kid had a real chance of placing at State. I am sure you can too. I also know the #5 wrestler in some regions may very well be a state placer. I say let them all wrestle. More wrestlers, more revenue for the city and the SAAC. M...

Re: Where's South
A few WSAZ thoughts ... I used to like the “Follow the Leader” bracket we used for some years at WSAZ - if the guy you lost to in your first match won his next one, you were still in. This helped the poor guy who drew a top seed his first match. No one likes to travel several hours, draw a stud and ...

Congratulations to my old Milton team, who finished first at the Washington courthouse invitational tournament near Columbus this past weekend. It is a great experience to travel outside your local area and see different styles of wrestling. This will pay dividends as the season goes on.

Re: Middle Score Wrestling Results ???!?!?!
I coached for over thirty years and I never had a parent ask for scores. We, as coaches have to try to properly seed tournaments and without results it is a crap shoot at best. Just a win/ loss record is not enough to seed properly. We need to know who the wrestler has been on the mat with and the r...

Re: Middle Score Wrestling Results ???!?!?!
Doc has provided several ways to post these up. We are all tired after an event but for crying out loud - take a few minutes when you have recovered to post them. The coaches poll depends on results as does seeding at later tournaments. No excuse for not keeping records and posting scores. Part of t...
