Nine Mountaineers earned wins as the No. 25 West Virginia University wrestling team defeated Lock Haven, 30-3, on Saturday evening at the WVU Coliseum in Morgantown.

No. 11/13 Zeke Moisey, Zachary Moore and No. 11/13 Dylan Cottrell each came away with a major decision, while Tony DeAngelo and A.J. Vizcarrondo both won bouts in overtime.

West Virginia (5-2) celebrated its annual Cradles for Cancer event, with wrestlers donning pink socks and athletic tape and both coaching staffs wearing pink shirts/ties. WVU head coach Sammie Henson started the event in 2014 in honor of his wife, Stephanie, who was battling breast cancer.

Moisey got the Mountaineers off to a 4-0 lead with an 8-0 major decision over Jake Field at 125 pounds. A first-period takedown and a pair of nearfall points put him ahead 4-0 heading into the second period, where he added another takedown for a 6-0 lead. Moisey then registered an escape and tacked on the riding time point to close the third with the major.

At 141 pounds, DeAngelo won a 3-1 decision in the first tiebreaker over Lock Haven’s Daniel Neff. Both wrestlers scored escapes in regulation to end the third period with the score knotted 1-1. DeAngelo rode Neff in the first 30 seconds of the tiebreaker, then went to the defensive positon for the second 30 seconds of the first tiebreaker period. He scored a reversal on Neff midway through for the win.

Moore picked up his first official collegiate victory with a 13-4 major decision against Cody Wheeler at 149 pounds after Henson pulled his redshirt last weekend at the Cliff Keen Invitational in Las Vegas. Moore notched a pair of takedowns in the first period, adding four nearfall points after the second, to close the first stanza with an 8-1 advantage. Wheeler was awarded a penalty point and an escape in the second, cutting Moore’s lead to 8-3. However, Moore started the third period with a reversal, then cut Wheeler loose only to score another takedown for a 12-4 advantage before adding a point for riding time at the end of the third.

Posting his team-best sixth major decision of the season, Cottrell topped LHU’s Aaron McKinney by a score of 14-2 at 157. Cottrell used a takedown and four nearfall points for a 6-0 lead after three minutes, extending his lead to 11-1 with an escape and two takedowns in the second. Another takedown in the third and a point for riding time gave him the major over McKinney.

Also notching his first official collegiate victory at 165 pounds was Connor Flynn, who also had his redshirt pulled in Las Vegas. Flynn scored early and often on Lock Haven’s Cody Cordes in the first, taking a 6-0 lead on a pair of takedowns and a pair of back points. Neither wrestler scored in the second before Flynn rode Cordes through the third, drawing a stalling point and the riding time point for an 8-1 decision.

Ross Renzi trailed Tyler Wood 2-0 after the first period in the 174-pound bout, but registered a takedown in the second to cut the deficit to one, down 3-2, with riding time in Wood’s favor after the second. Renzi then worked Wood for a trio of takedowns in the third period. Though Wood claiming the point for riding time, Renzi earned the 8-7 decision in the end.

A first period takedown and a reversal in the second helped Bubba Scheffel take a 5-3 decision over Tristan Sponseller at 184 pounds, giving WVU a 24-3 advantage. No. 8/9 Jacob A. Smith also used a first-period takedown to propel him to a win over Matthew Moore at 197 pounds. Smith registered an escape in the second and added riding time at the end in claiming the 4-0 decision.

Vizcarrondo squared off with Brad Emerick at heavyweight, with each scoring an escape in regulation to force overtime. Vizcarrondo notched the takedown in sudden victory to secure a 3-1 decision and give the Mountaineers the 30-3 win.

After the holiday break, the Mountaineers will travel to Chattanooga, Tennessee, to take part in the Southern Scuffle on Jan.1-2.
