Scheffel Claims Title at Joe Parisi Open

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (November 21, 2015) – Bubba Scheffel went undefeated to claim the 184-pound title as the West Virginia University wrestling team competed at the Joe Parisi Open in St. Charles, Missouri on Saturday.

No. 5 Zeke Moisey, No. 17 Dylan Cottrell and No. 8 Jacob A. Smith finished in the runner-up spots at 125, 157 and 197 pounds, respectively. Moisey moved to 9-2 on the season while Cottrell suffered his first loss of the year, going 4-1 at the event to move to 10-1 on the year. Smith registered a pair of pins to total three on the season with a 9-2 overall mark.

Scheffel notched a trio of wins on his way to the title at 184 pounds. He won a 10-4 decision over Danny Hicks of Illinois before defeating Roger Smith-Bergsrud in a 4-0 decision. Scheffel then pinned SIUE’s Derek Nagel in the second period (4:05) for the win, moving to 6-3 on the year.

Moisey rolled through four straight wins, registering three bonus-point victories, to earn his spot in the finals at 125 pounds. He started the day with a first period pin of Central Oklahoma’s Josh Breece (1:46) before taking a 13-2 major decision over Nicholas Brennan of Missouri. Moisey notched his second fall of the day just 30 seconds into his bout with Damarcus Gurly of Missouri Baptist. An 8-2 decision win over Aaron Assad of Missouri secured Moisey’s spot in the finals. He then dropped a 14-4 major decision to Missouri’s Barlow McGhee to claim second place.

Cottrell notched a pair of major decisions on a 5-0 run to the finals at 157 pounds. He won a 14-2 major over McKendree’s Ryan Strope before winning a close bout with Missouri’s Matt Lemanowicz, taking a 5-4 decision. Cottrell registered his second major of the day – his fourth of the season – against Iowa’s Logan Thomsen by a score of 15-6. He then went on to top SIUE’s Nate Higgins in the semifinals, 6-1, before losing an 8-2 decision to finish as the runner-up.

Back-to-back pins highlighted Smith’s afternoon. After winning a 12-5 decision over Matthew Hurford in the first round, he went on to take a 3-1 decision from Oklahoma’s Preston Weigel. Smith then won by fall over Justin Whitten of Missouri in 1:56 before sending Oklahoma’s Austin Marsden to the mat in the second period for the win at 4:54. He then suffered a 2-0 setback to 2014 NCAA National Champion and No. 2 ranked J’Den Cox to finish as the runner-up at 197.

Ross Renzi went 3-1 to finish third at 165 pounds. Renzi lost a 6-0 decision to Missouri’s Daniel Lewis o move to the consolation finals, where he won a 13-3 major decision over Purdue’s Lucas Schmit before taking a 17-6 major decision over Clayton Monebrake of Indianapolis. He faced teammate Tim Wheeling the third-place match, winning a 4-2 decision.

The Mountaineers will head to Las Vegas on Dec. 4-5 for the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational. They return home after that to host Lock Haven at the WVU Coliseum on Dec. 12 in a 7 p.m. dual.
