WVU Downs ASU for Third Straight Win

TEMPE, Ariz. (January 4, 2015) – Zeke Moisey had a pin at 125 pounds and Parker VonEgidy registered another major decision at 174 as the West Virginia University wrestling team rolled to its third straight win with a 22-12 victory at Arizona State on Sunday evening at Wells Fargo Arena.

It was sweet revenge for the Mountaineers, as the Sun Devils had previously taken a 19-13 victory in the first meeting between the two teams on November 13 at WVU Coliseum.

“This was a nice win for our guys,” said WVU coach Sammie Henson. “They battled, controlled the center of the mat and won in positions that have been a focus in our practices. The system works and they are starting to see that if they stick to the plan, great things will happen.”

VonEgidy moved to 3-0 in a Mountaineer singlet with a 14-4 major decision over ASU’s Matt Schneider. VonEgidy used a pair of first period takedowns to take a 4-1 lead into the second, where he added another takedown and an escape to make it 7-1. He closed things out with a trio of takedowns and tacked on the riding time point to earn his second straight major and put WVU up 4-0.

No. 2 Blake Stauffer won a 6-1 decision over Bubba Scheffel at 184 pounds to put the Sun Devils on the board and cutting the WVU lead to just one at 4-3.

Jake A. Smith kept the Mountaineers in front with a 6-0 decision over Josh DaSilveira at 197 pounds. Smith scored a takedown in the first period, then started on top in the second before adding a pair of nearfall points. He completed the shutout with an escape in the third as well as the riding time point as West Virginia extended its lead to 7-3.

After going to double overtime in their first meeting of the year, heavyweight A.J. Vizcarrondo defeated Chace Eskam in a 3-2 decision with a third-period takedown.

With the Mountaineers leading 10-3, Moisey took on Ares Carpio at 125 pounds. Moisey made quick work of Carpio, putting his back to the mat in just 39 seconds as West Virginia extended its advantage to 16-3.

After dropping a 13-5 major to Dalton Brady in their first meeting, Cory Stainbrook got his revenge with an 8-5 decision in the rematch. Stainbrook scored an early takedown in the first to take a 2-1 lead. Starting in the defensive position in the second, he recorded an escape before adding another takedown to take a 5-1 lead. Brady added a pair of takedowns in the second, but Stainbrook registered two escapes and added riding time in earning the win as WVU took a 19-3 lead.

No. 10/12 Michael Morales tacked on three more team points with a 5-4 decision against Matt Kraus at 141 pounds. Morales used a takedown and a reversal to take a 4-2 lead after one. The two battled to a scoreless second period before Morales recorded an escape in the third period to secure the win.

Arizona State’s Christian Pagdilao won a 10-4 decision over James Dekrone at 149 pounds. Roman Perryman dropped a heartbreaking 4-3 decision to Oliver Pierce at 157, losing on a last-second takedown as the Sun Devils cut the WVU lead to 13 at 22-9.

For the second time this year, the last bout of the match went to overtime as ASU’s Jacen Peterson took a 10-8 decision over Ross Renzi in sudden victory. Renzi led 4-2 after the first before Peterson tied things up 6-6 after the second period. Peterson registered an escape to start the third before Renzi scored a takedown. However, Peterson escaped once again as the two ended regulation with the score knotted at 8-8. Peterson scored a takedown midway through the first overtime, but it wasn’t enough as the Mountaineers took the win, 22-12.

“WVU and ASU will be a rivalry match in the future. These are two programs tirelessly working to get better,” said Henson.

West Virginia will travel to Hampton, Virginia, on January 9 and 10 to compete in the Virginia Duals at the Hampton Coliseum.
