Notes from Coach Doyle

March 18, 2015

The past weekend in St. Louis will be a lasting memory in Wheeling Jesuit Wrestling history. Not only did the program qualify three true freshman to the NCAA Division II Championships, but we returned with an All-American! Dustin Warner will be forever known as the Cardinals first national placer winner. Dustin finished the weekend as the 5th best wrestler in the country at 125lbs, going 4-2 on the weekend. More impressively is that Dustin's only losses came to the #1 and #2 ranked wrestlers in the country.

The weekend provided great evidence that the program is in position to impact the national level much earlier than most would have expected. Along with Dustin's accomplishment, Nolan Whitely came within one point of winning his match to reach All-American status. Preston Bowshier competed well and went 0-2 on the weekend, gaining invaluable experience for future appearances at the national tournament. The team finished in 29th place.

This weekend we also received word that Brad Kakos received Academic All-American status!! Brad was the recipient of our prestigious Cardinal Culture Award last year and there is not a more deserving individual to be known as our first Academic All-American recipient. Congratulations to Brad!

We are appreciative of all of your support in helping us grow the program to it's current state. The season was a huge success as the team finished 10-5, repeated as WV Invitational Champions, finished 3rd at the Virginia Duals and an impressive 4th place finish at the Super Region I tournament. Thank you!
