Spinks Closes Out Season at NCAA National Championships Friday

March 11, 2016

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Alderson Broaddus junior Cody Spinks had his season come to a close as he dropped both of his matches Friday as he competed in the NCAA Division II National Championships in Sioux Falls.

Spinks was the first AB wrestler to ever compete in the national tournament.

In the opening round, Spinks was pinned 38 seconds into the second period against Jon Inman from Fort Hays State. He opened the match in the first 15 seconds with a takedown but Inman answered with an escape and a takedown of his own to take a 3-2 lead after one. In the second period, Inman recorded an escape and another takedown to take a 6-2 lead before catching Spinks and recording the fall.

Spinks went on to the consolation round and fell to Brandon O'Neill from Ashland in a second period fall. He trailed 2-0 after one and then 4-0 in the second period before recording an escape to make it 4-1. Later in the period, Spinks took down O'Neill to make it 4-3 but he answered with a reversal and pinned Spinks with six seconds to go in the second.

After a solid season and a third-place finish at regionals, Spinks closes out the year with a 23-4 record.
