Alderson Broaddus with Two Champs at Casperson Classic

BUENA VISTA, Va. – The Alderson Broaddus University wrestling team competed at the Casperson Classic held Saturday afternoon at Southern Virginia University.
"I have mixed feelings about the day," said head coach Sam Gardner. "Any time you put guys in the finals of seven weigh classes in a tournament it means you are doing good things. We led the tournament in pins, which is something we put a good amount of emphasis on."
AB finished with two champions on the day and had seven wrestlers reach the finals.
Davis Solak and Cody Spinks each had first place finishes to lead the way for the Battlers. At 174 pounds, Solak finished 4-0 on the afternoon with two pins. He won 10-4 in the finals.
"Davis (Solak) looked really strong today," said Gardner. "Obviously he is a strong kid, but he got to his offense, his leg attacks, especially in the finals. That is a great improvement over last week. He is growing as a wrestler."
At 184 pounds, Spinks defeated his teammate Josiah Solak 16-1 in the finals for the win. Spinks finished 2-0 on the afternoon while Solak finished 1-1.
"Cody Spinks is one of the most physically talented kids I've ever coached," said Gardner. "He can do things that defy convention, if not physics. Even though he's ranked at 174, I think if he continues to perform this way at 184 with this energy and passion, we'll keep him at that weight."
Micah Powell, Matt Harris, Jason West, and Logan Shurina all finished with second place finishes for AB. Powell lost 5-2 in the finals after going 2-1 on the afternoon. Harris went 1-1 in the 149 pound weight class and lost 13-11 in the championship.
West, who competed at 157, finished with three wins before falling 17-3 in the finals and Shurina lost 7-4 in his finals match after winning a pair of matches.
"Like every week we'll learn from this weekend and continue to grow," said Gardner. "We don't need to make many changes technically, but we will work on becoming more tactically aware in certain situations. I'm proud of these guys and I enjoy the opportunity to coach them."
Also placing for the Battlers was Jacob Monn (4th), Chris Brent (3rd), Jon Sigley (4th), and Tyler Arnett (3rd).
AB returns to the mats on November 21st for the Green Terror Duals.
